King's Cup Elephant Polo
Elephants, renowned for a rather slow paste and associated with forestry work and wild animal programs in Discovery. Polo, a gentleman sport to be played from the top of a well trained stallion. The two words just don't mix, do they?
Well, the organiser of the tournament, Anantara Resort and Spa Hua Hin, seems to think so. Once a year, Hua Hin, normally host this event where international recognised polo players get the chance to practise their skills from the back of an elephant. Both players and the elephant mammoths are from all over the world, but the elephants themselves are locally bred.
The King's Cup Elephant Polo is situated in one of the local military bases outside of Hua Hin and the layout of the tournament has an old colonial feel and appearance but the rules of the game as well as the equipment resembles ‘normal' polo. The tournament is heavily sponsored by international companies and you will see polo teams with names such as the ‘Chivas Regal Scotland team'.
The aim of the tournament is to create awareness about the threat facing elephants in Thailand and abroad and in 2005 it raised more than 2 million THB which was donated to the National Elephant Institute. The tournament was held in Chiang Mai in 2006 but we hope to see it back to Hua Hin this September.

TRADITIONAL DRAMA AND SPORT
Musical dance dramas dominate the Thai theatre scene. The Hindu epic ‘The Ramayana' (in Thai, Ramakien), a classic adventure tale of good versus evil is an ideal example of cross cultural influence. This is proved by the fact that Ramayana forms the theme for most Thai dramas. The most spectacular form of traditional Thai theatre is khon, a stylized drama performed in masks and elaborate costumes by a troupe of highly trained classical dancers. This dance has been passed from generation to generation. The graceful movements are choreographed and each gesture or movement is meaningful. A classical orchestra sings the story. The orchestra is known as phipat.
Lakhon is a more serious and refined version of khon. Lakhon is dominated by stories from Ramayana, Buddhist Jataka tales as well as local folk tales.Dancers trained in lakhon wear decorative costumes. They don't wear masks and dance to phi pat orchestra. This dance is performed to please the the spirits as well as a token of gratitude from worshippers. The most common form of lakhon is lakhon chatri and is performed in shirines like Erawan and Lak Muang in Bangkok .
Likay with its jokes, and comic characters, is even more popular with Thai people. Most likay drama troupes write their own stories, generally romantic comedies own. The costumes are Thai with a strong western influence. Likay theatre troupes travel around the country and generally have shows at temple fairs and make shift stages.
